Sterile Pink Bollworms

An infestation of pink bollworms in Asia occurred in the 1920’s and hit the United States cotton belt that caused a lot of damage to the crop and the industry. In order to get rid of the pests, scientists genetically engineered billions of sterile pink bollworms and then release them into the infested fields. The new pests battled with the non-sterile males for mates which greatly help decreased the number of eggs being fertilized and thus the number of cotton plants destroyed.
